Mangroves: Forests of the Tide

  • Proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) walking though mangrove roots.
  • Sponges, tuncates, and other invertebrate life growing on the roots of Red Mangrove trees in the Belize Cays.
  • A school of silversides fish swim over a sea star and beneath the canopy of red mangrove trees on a Belize Cay.
  • Low tide reveals the roots of Bruguiera mangroves along a river channel.
  • Scarlet ibises on their roosting trees on a small mangrove island in the Caroni Swamp.
  • Women pulling shrimp fry collecting nets along the shallows of the Kholpatura River.
  • Charcoal wood collectors with boats loaded with Goran wood (Ceriops sp.) harvested from the mangrove forest.
  • Mangroves at the edge of the Bay of Bengal on the S coast of Bangladesh. These mangroves are battered by the sea, but are important in protecting the coast from storms and erosion.
